FAQ

What is the difference between 24/48 hour Holter, Event Recorder, and ECG’s:

Holter: With both the 24or 48 hour monitor you wear this device the entire period requested by the doctor and cannot remove the device at any point. It will record the entire time it is worn in the selected period.

Event Recorder: This device is worn for 2 weeks and can be removed throughout the duration and reapplied. Electrodes and batteries are supplied upon appointment so you can change these out. The event recorder is set to only go off when initiated by the patient. It will record 30 seconds before and after it is pressed. This device can be filled up 6 times and then will need to be download; which is done in the comfort of your own home.

Electrocardiograms (ECG’s): This procedure is done at the office. You will be requested to lay flat on the exam table at which point electrodes (sticky pads) are applied to specific areas on your chest, arms and legs. The exam itself is no longer then 1 minute.

Things you can do to prepare for you appointment:

You will be wearing your monitor for either 24 or 48 hours and will not be able to remove it during that time. So, it may be a good idea to have a bath or shower prior to your appointment (you will not be able to get the monitor wet, but if necessary you can take a sponge bath). Please refrain from wearing cream or oils on your chest due to the fact that the electrodes will have a hard time sticking to your skin. If you wish, you can shave your chest if necessary or we will be done at the office if any hair will compromise the recording.

Every 24-48hrs or every time you bath, shower or swim. You must change your electrodes, do not go more then 48hrs without changing them.

When should I change my batteries?

When you first plug in the lead set at the top of the recorder the second number that pops up in the middle of the screen tells you approximately how many days are left on your batteries. Also a flashing batter light will appear on the top left hand corner of the screen if the batteries are too low.

No, you will only need to hold the recorder button until you hear a sound, then you can release. The recorder will stop on it’s on.

Take the recorder off and wait till the next business day to phone and download.

Can I just put the recorder on once I start to feel my symptoms?

No, the recorder is designed to have a pre-record of up to 30 seconds. Also the recorder is programmed to look for other occurring symptoms that you may be experience but do not actually feel.

Can I hit the record button to download symptoms right after one another?

You can but you must wait at least 1 minute between each download due to the 30 seconds pre record and the 30 seconds post record of each event.

Will I lose my recordings if I change the batteries?

No, changing the batteries will not let you lose any of the recordings.

Can I put cream or oil on my skin before I put the electrodes on?

No, if you need to take it off for a little bit you can but cream or oil on then, but you need a clean dry surface for the recorder to read properly.
